Fed: No targets in visa crackdown, says PM

CAIRNS, Aug 12 AAP - Australia would not pick on any particular country in its crackdownon visitors who overstay visas, Prime Minister John Howard said today.

The government is reportedly to target visitors who overstay tourist visas througha controversial profiling process which identifies which people from which country aremost at risk of overstaying.

The Ethnic Community Council of NSW has raised concerns saying it appeared the governmentwas not concentrating on European countries.

"This is all about just making certain that people who come here on a certain basisdon't stay on some other basis," Mr Howard told Cairns radio 846.

"We are not picking on anybody.

"There is some suggestion that we were going to be more friendly to caucasians thanAsians - that's absurd," Mr Howard said.

"Australia was the last country in the world that would be unfriendly to visitors from Asia."
